Do you believe public schools in Connecticut require an essential makeover, as outlined by Superior Court Judge Thomas Moukawsher's decision in September? What, in your opinion, is the number-one issue regarding public education in the state?
I support Judge Moukawsher's opinion and would certainly work towards improving the quality, productivity, and funding of our public school systems throughout the state of Connecticut.
Will you oppose legislation that will require utility customers to subsidize the profitability of merchant generators, such as the Millstone nuclear power plant, unless those merchant generators demonstrate the need to their customers and the state with financial reports that show their actual loss in profits?
How would you reduce the state employee pension liabilities and debt service, which together comprise 25% of the state's annual budget?
I believe the structure of state employee pensions should be looked into via a feasibility study to examine what measures may produce a win-win scenario for both the state and its valuable employees.
Does Connecticut have a revenue problem or a spending problem?
In my honest opinion I believe the state of Connecticut has a spending problem more than likely due to the non-existence of established priorities with supporting documented justifications. We can not persist without a proper expenditure review and justification process.
Would you support laws that provide for family leave or other workplace flexibility for employees who have to take time off for family caregiving purposes? What proposals would you champion to help family caregivers who are balancing a career and family obligations or health emergencies?
Life does happen and unforeseen circumstances do occur many times in people's lives. Therefore it is a necessity to have these FMLA provisions to enable caregivers to not perceive they are at risk of job loss when there is a family member in need or emergency. I support these measures as they enhance one's quality of life.
Community College students recently won a reprieve but are facing the possibility of a significant tuition hike. What are you planning to do to ensure that community college remains an affordable option for families?
I will advocate for both state subsidization along with local municipality subsidies to keep tuition cost affordable, and I will advocate for corporate sponsorship from local area businesses who will benefit because a better skilled workforce population will come about.
What would you do as a state legislator to address the opioid epidemic in our state?
The opioid epidemic must be examined from the grass-roots level to assess what local area stressors may be promoting usage. Collaboration with local police departments, educational institutions, and mental health professionals should assist in curbing the proliferation of this problem.
Today, over 600,000 residents in our state don’t have a way to save for retirement at work. Knowing that employees are 15 times more likely to save merely by having access to payroll deduction, will you commit to supporting the newly passed Connecticut Retirement Security Act that will provide these workers with access to private payroll deduction IRA accounts?
I would like to examine this act a bit more for clarity, however I surely do promote enabling people to better plan and prepare for retirement. Saving for retirement, or even for a rainy day is a primary concern for most and many working individuals. Therefore, assistance to achieve this goal reasonably is appreciated.
Who are you supporting for president and why?
I am supporting my parties endorsed candidate Hillary Clinton because this country both needs and deserves a focused leader that has been tested and prepared to lead this country forward to prosperity for the next 4 years.
