Why are you running for this office?
West Hartford is one of the best places in the country to live. I'm running for re-election because i want to make sure it stays that way.
What is the most pressing local issue facing your community and how would you solve it (within the capacity of the office for which you are running)?
One of West Hartford's strengths is our economic diversity. I am working to ensure that West Hartford remains an affordable and dynamic community of all of its residents. We need to control costs, but also maintain the services that all of our residents rely upon.
With the state's ongoing budget crisis looming over the election, what are your plans for your community's budget? Is there anything you can do make your town less dependent on revenue from the state?
We passed a budget that anticipated state cuts, while still paying down debt and protecting crucial programs. The issue isn't our dependency on the state, but the state's dependency on our taxpayers. I will fight for West Hartford's fair share.
The legislature has been debating various ideas to allow towns to raise revenue locally through something other than property taxes. If you could ease your residents' property tax burden by adding another method of taxation, is there anything you might consider for your town?
I'll wait to see what the legislature comes up with.
Are you in favor of regionalizing more services in conjunction with other nearby communities? If so, which ones?
I am open to the concept, and support our current regionalized health district, but would need to see proof of both savings and appropriate assurances of quality and political control.
Should your school district get the same amount of education funding from the state if your district's enrollment is dropping?
Under any rational formula for need, West Hartford would be receiving more aid that it does now.
What's one thing most people don't know about you?
My hair used to be black.
