With the state's ongoing budget crisis looming over the election, what are your plans for your community's budget? Is there anything you can do make your town less dependent on revenue from the state?
Growth is difficult for Coventry. No highway, no mass transit and no infrastructure (water, sewer) for business development. We need to leverage Uconn's technology park to attract spin-offs.
The legislature has been debating various ideas to allow towns to raise revenue locally through something other than property taxes. If you could ease your residents' property tax burden by adding another method of taxation, is there anything you might consider for your town?
Are you in favor of regionalizing more services in conjunction with other nearby communities? If so, which ones?
We already do many things on a regional basis. We continue to do things regionally when it makes sense. In some cases, regionalizing the wrong things just creates non-productive overhead.
Why are you running for this office?
I believe that Coventry students deserve educational opportunities equal to the surrounding towns and now that we are approaching that equality, I want to remain on the Board to insure we do not lose ground.
What is the most pressing local issue facing your community and how would you solve it (within the capacity of the office for which you are running)?
Shrinking state dollars are threatening to decimate education and/or raise our property taxes to an unsustainable level. I will work with the Board to make the education dollars go as far as possible.
Should your school district get the same amount of education funding from the state if your district's enrollment is dropping?
We should get a PREDICTIBLE amount of money per student and all of the special education costs from the state. The formula needs to be setup WELL ahead of time and phased in. We can manage the rest.
What's one thing most people don't know about you?
